Backlinks in an SEO world.

For those that don’t know, backlinks are incoming links to a website or web page.  So in layman’s terms, when somebody links to an article you just wrote on your website or blog that is considered a backlink.   In a search engine optimization world, the number of  backlinks is a strong indicator of the web page or sites importance.

Search engines such as google use the number of backlinks a web site has as a vital factor for determining its search engine ranking.  A backlink from a prestiged or authoritive site that matches your sites content is believed to be of higher value.

Here are two strong  tips to help you gain a high number of backlinks which will improve your search engine rankings.

  • Find websites that match yours in content and ask them to setup link exchanges with you.  Most webmasters or bloggers do a daily link exchange.  Don’t be discouraged if you don’t get any replies at first, most more established sites won’t give you the time of day.
  • When you author your post, spread the word to social bookmarking sites.  Digg, reddit and stumbleupon to name a few.  Even if you don’t receive any traffic the backlinks will add up in the long run.

    Tracking backlinks is easy.  Simply go to google.com and in the search bar type link:your-sitename.com.  Feel free to check out the competition as well!
