Introduction to Permalinks

Permalinks are the permanent URLs to your individual blog posts, as well as categories and other types of weblog postings.  A permalink is what a blogger will use to link to your story or how you might send a link to something through email.  The URL to each post should be permanent and not change, hence the word permalink.

There are three basic types of Wordpress permalinks.

The default “out-of-the-box” looks like:

http://example.com/?p=1

-Not exactly the prettiest looking permalink.

Second is referred to as Pathinfo.

http://example.com/index.php/yyyy/mm/dd/post-name/

-This is a slightly neater looking permalink, organized by date and the name of the particular post.

Last is referred to as pretty permalinks.

   http://example.com/category/post-name/
or http://example.com/year/month/day/post-name

These are the holy grail of permalinks. There are many different ways to format these, but the most common, and most versatile looks like the ones above.

More information on Permalinks Can be found at Wordpress.
